Virtually unheard of 10 years ago, polished concrete floors are fast becoming the no-wax floor of choice for architects and builders across the US. The polished floors first gained popularity overseas and customers in the US soon came around to the benefits:
Functionality: What better to have as a floor than solid concrete? It is one of the strongest, cheapest, most durable materials and it is probably already there! It can be driven on in garage and warehouse installations. Machines, shelving, and heavy products can be placed on top. Very easily cleaned for regular foot traffic and doesn't have to be waxed like most other floors.
Maintenance Savings: Polished concrete floors require significantly less labor to keep clean as opposed to marble, granite, terrazzo, tile, etc because they don't need to be waxed or resealed nearly as often to retain the beautiful shine. In the past if you wanted the shine and reflectability that polished concrete floors provide you would need to apply an epoxy covering. Then you would need to reapply every few years, adding to the long term cost of the floor.
Aesthetic Beauty and Flexibility of Designs:The perfect floor was always there-right under your feet! You just needed someone to grind off the top layer exposing the aggregate and then staining and dying to the color and designs wanted. Endless color combinations, designs, and inlays are possible. Glass pieces, aluminum lines, special rocks, even computer chips can be placed in the concrete and then exposed by our grinding equipment for a custom look.
